Although Millard was once considered a separate town, it is now a neighborhood of Omaha. Millard's origins can be traced to 1870, when Ezra Millard laid out the town which was to bear his name. The town sprung up around its prominent downtown area, which is located around 132nd Street and L Street. Millard is found in the southwest area of Omaha. The community and its surroundings have experienced significant growth in recent years as the area has become a wealthy enclave within the greater Omaha community.

Although the neighborhood of Millard has been annexed into the city of Omaha, Millard still has its own independent public school district. Millard Public Schools operates four high schools, six middle schools, and 25 elementary schools. Millard Public Schools have a strong reputation for offering a high quality education. Millard Public Schools is the third largest school district in the state of Nebraska.
Public transportation is provided in Omaha by Metro Transit. Omaha is serviced by both Amtrak and Greyhound, and the city's airport, Eppley Airfield. The Millard neighborhood also has its own airport, run by the Omaha Airport Authority.
