Welcome to Gretna, Nebraska, a charming town of about 4,500 people in America's heartland. Gretna real estate is experiencing the fastest growth in Nebraska. This city, founded in 1886, is only 15 miles southwest of Omaha off of Interstate 80. It is approximately 40 miles northwest of Lincoln, the state capital.

Gretna is located in Sarpy County on Highway 31, just south of the junction with highway 370 that leads east to I-80.

Shopping and dining

The Nebraska Crossing Mall, where Hwy 31 meets Interstate 80, is the newest shopping center with 78 stores. Leading brand stores featuring designer clothing, shoes, accessories, entertainment products and sporting goods are a few of the shops at this mall. Tiny Town Village for children is a popular attraction at the mall.

Voodoo Taco is a popular eatery for mall shopping along with national fast-food restaurants. A Super 8 hotel is located next to the mall.

Village Pointe Shopping in nearby Omaha is also a popular location for shopping, dining and entertainment.

Local restaurants in Gretna include D&K's Gretna Cafe, Runza Restaurant, Brag N Rights,  We'll Smoke U BBQ and other eateries.

Recreation

Gretna real estate includes four city parks with sports facilities and the public swimming pool. The supervised pool is open from Memorial Day to lake August with lessons available for children and adults.

The North Park features a youth baseball field. All parks have shelters with picnic tables that can be reserved through the city's Parks website.

Gretna also has an Arbor Society that monitors the city's trees and keeps them in good health. This includes the trees and shrubs in parks as well as city streets.

Schramm Park State Recreation Area features the Ak-Sar-Ben Aquarium open year-round. The park is located nine miles south of Gretna on the banks of the Platt River.

Ak-Sar-Ben Aquarium is the only facility dedicated to aquatic life in the Great Plains. The 12 tanks feature fresh-water species from local lakes and rivers. This includes most species of bass, trout, perch, walleye, catfish and paddlefish. The Aquatic Education Center also houses terrariums with various amphibians and reptiles including turtles and frogs.

A two-mile trail wanders through the park along the river and through the forest. The trail is open all year to hikers and bicycle riders. Dogs are allowed as long as they remain on their leaches.

Living

Gretna, zip code 68028, is a small community of mainly single family homes. There are also apartments for rent. Residents make work at home or commute to nearby Omaha. The median home price is approximately $178,000.

Contemporary homes are generally three bedroom and two-bath homes ranging from 1,350 to 1,750 square feet. A five-bedroom home ranges from 2,400 to over 4,000 square feet.

Gretna also has homes in the $400,000 to $600,000 range and even million dollar homes with extensive acreage. Large farms are found in the area around Gretna.

The city has areas of new construction and several homes for sale were built after 2010. Gretna real estate also includes vacant land for building. This is an area of gently rolling hills. Homesites can offer views of the Platte river and the town.

Gretna has a public library and a Children's Library with special programs for youngsters. The library is an 85-year tradition with the city.

Schools, Healthcare, and Transportation

The Gretna School District 37 was created in 1888 with a brick schoolhouse for the town's students. The district today covers 70 square miles and takes in other suburban communities between Omaha to the east and Lincoln to the southeast. The district has approximately 2,550 students.

Gretna High School, home of the Gretna Dragons, has a rating of 8 out of 10 by Great Schools. Students are encouraged to participate in sports, band, drama and school clubs. A college-prep program is available for students.

Midwest Regional Health Services of Omaha maintains a Wellness Center at 818 Village Square in Gretna. The doctors offer family medical services to residents at this location.

CHI Health Alegent Creighton Clinic offers family medicine and pediatric care in Gretna.

Southwest Family Physicians also has a regional office in Gretna as well as the main Omaha facility.

The nearest hospital is Lakeside in Omaha, about 10 miles east.

Transportation facilities includes the private Koke Airport, just five miles south of Gretna.

Millard Airport, 10 miles to the south, has aircraft services and charters. This airport is part of the Omaha Airport Authority with scheduled regional air service.

Omaha Airport at Eppley Airfield has scheduled airline service to airports throughout the U.S. Major carriers serve OMA.
