Beautifully situated in Douglas County, the neighborhood of Elkhorn, Nebraska is located on the western edge of Omaha. Founded in 1865 by George Crawford, the town of Elkhorn was named for a nearby river. The arrival of the Union Pacific Railroad and establishing the ideal location to cross the Elkhorn River allowed Elkhorn to expand and the population to grow. The area is well-known for trying to keep from being annexed by Omaha, including trying to annex nearby neighborhoods in an effort to bring the town's population above 10,000. Under state law, a city with a population above 10,000 cannot be annexed. In 2007, the efforts failed and Elkhorn was annexed by Omaha, ceasing its existence as an independent municipality. The area now enjoys numerous amenities that the close proximity to Omaha brings.
